You fight enemies on a hex-based map using an initiative based system, with combat broken up in rounds. The Iron Oath Battles are the meat of the game. You’ll also encounter battles periodically. Typically, moving one room take one time unit, but you’ll find random events in the expedition that may exchange time units for a benefit – take 1 TU to open up this chest, and get a health potion and a bandage which you might need. These are typically negative, making it so more damage is taken from traps in random events or increasing the chance of an ambush, though there is the rare positive effect. You have 16 time units before a random modifier is applied to the expedition. Expeditions are, basically, dungeon diving with the ultimate goal of clearing out the final boss. There’s a variety of contracts you can get- transport X to Y city, go clear out this dungeon, fight enemies in these areas. Cities are randomly affected by events, which influence things either within the city or immediately outside of it- the tournament event makes it so that there are high level mercenaries to hire at the inn, and the bandits event makes it so you’re more likely to be ambushed by bandits in the city’s region of influence. It’s where you can accept contracts to earn money, hire new mercenaries, buy equipment, or heal your mercenaries if they’ve taken on wounds. Solid game, lore has a bit of an manga-fantasy feel to it (maybe it’s just me) where invasions of demons and dragons and more periodically occur, to the helplessness of the heroes. (huntress and stormcaller S tier) Fluid game, great story, visually appealing (really scratches the battle brother itch). Fantastic classes, can easily see some being leagues better than others. The Iron Oath is a lite tactical RPG that offers a lot of depth in a small game, even in this Early Access state. Your choices bear consequences that will alter the fates of your mercs, your company, and all of Caelum. Lead wisely, die foolishly you’ll face difficult decisions, and the path you follow won’t always be popular. Build up their power, customize and complement their abilities, and become a force to be reckoned with. That’s basically it – you hire mercenaries, move between cities completing contracts, getting your mercenaries experience and equipment to take on bigger contracts as you progress through the story. You fight battles with your mercenaries, celebrating their triumphs and bemoaning their deaths. You move from city to city over a fixed overworld, building up reputation with various factions and individual cities, in order to get access to more lucrative contracts to pay your mercenaries while you progress in the story. You hire mercenaries into your company, and use them to fulfill contracts to make money and progress through the game’s story. The premise is this: You run a mercenary company. Assemble a well-rounded crew of warriors, rogues, and spellcasters. Forge your team An iron chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Earn wealth and renown by completing contracts for Caelum’s vying factions, and invest in upgrading your organization. Control your company’s destiny Manage your guild’s roster, finances, and political relationships. Cities fall and rise again as the Noble Houses vie for power, leading to new opportunities and unexpected perils. An ever-evolving overworld Caelum is a sprawling, always changing realm. Your mercs will age, retire, and die over the decades, and your company-and strategy-will need to adapt to the shifting tides. The cold march of time Years pass as you navigate the world.
